Event Details

Māui Hīanga: Te Hui Taonga Tākaro is a national gathering that aims to bring together experts and practitioners from across Aotearoa to delve into the philosophies and practices of tākaro Māori. This unique event provides an opportunity to connect, share knowledge, and celebrate the interconnecting threads of tākaro within our whare and sectors.

Join us for an experience that will include wānanga, papamahi/workshops, crafted to deepen our collective understanding and practice of tākaro Māori.

We are excited to bring together a diverse group of speakers and participants from different whare, and sectors. Hihiritia mai e te iwi, expect to meet people who are:

·      Passionate about te ao Māori and staunch supporters of mana motuhake, tino rangatiratanga and "as" Māori approaches

·      Eager to learn and share knowledge about Tākaro Māori.

·      Playful, curious, and creative.

·      Driven to excel and explore new possibility and horizons.

Whai Rautaki - Strategic Intention

The strategic intention for Māui Hīanga: Te Hui Taonga Tākaro is to initiate succession planning, have this be rangatahi relevant, and utilise tākaro Māori to help us achieve the desired outcomes in wānanga.

There are three focus areas that weave into the kaupapa of 'Ngā Tūmanako o Māui':

• Tuakana-Teina – A key focus of this kaupapa is around tākaro succession and the development of our rangatahi. Our goal is to cultivate collaboration between tuakana and teina. We encourage all participants to bring at least one teina or like-minded individual to actively participate in this wānanga.

Whakakotahi – This hui provides an opportunity to reconnect and engage with fellow pūkenga tākaro and exponents from different whare and areas of expertise.

Tuku Ihotanga – This kaupapa also aims to cultivate the development and growth of shared philosophies, encompassing the inherent attitudes and behaviours linked with taonga tākaro. Through ongoing discussions, we can shape the future direction for Tākaro Māori.

Hei whakatepe ake, he kaupapa tākaro tēnei. It won't be your conventional hui, so expect the unexpected. Kia kawea tātou e te rēhia!

Me he pātai āu, he aha rānei, tēnā whakapā mai.

Key organisations involved

This kaupapa is being designed and delivered in partnership with Toi Tangata, and scafolds of their amazing contributions to this space, and relationships that they hold in Aotearoa.

This is made possible by the recent investment that the Sport NZ - Ihi Aotearoa has made towards the revitalisation and protection of Tāonga Tākaro in Aotearoa.

Recreation Aotearoa is committed to the revitalization of culturally distinct methods and ideologies around recreation and seeks to support the indigenising of our thoughts and actions as people here in Aotearoa. Our support for this hui aligns with our dedication to the revitalization of taonga tākaro Māori and the establishment of a strong, representative voice within the sector. We are honoured to work as allies in this space, upholding the Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and providing event management and logistical support towards the development of this kaupapa.
