VENUE - Te Pae
We are lucky to have secured the amazing new Conference and Event Centre in Ōtautahi for our 2024 Green Pavlova Conference.
Te Pae is located in the central city and within walking distance to many hotels, eateries, shops and outdoor spaces. It is a modern, purpose built event venue. Te Pae means 'The Gathering Place'.
We are lucky to have local iwi, Ngāi Tūāhuriri , to welcome us to Ōtautahi for Green Pavlova in the form of a mihi whakatau. For those who have experienced Recreation Aotearoa Conference's previously, this ceremony before the conference start won't be unfamiliar to you. However please read on for more information.
Mihi Whakatau – Pōwhiri. a pōwhiri if often conducted on a Marae, where you will likely observe karanga,( calling) wero, ( challenge) taking place as well as many other components. The mihi whakatau remains a formal proceeding and will follow the kawa (policy) set by the Iwi, or hapu. A mihi whakatau is often carried out in more contemporary spaces, and is considered slightly less formal.
In this case the mihi whakatau is still an official welcome for all delegates, speakers and guests to Green Pavlova at Te Pae. It removes the tapu (restrictions) of the manuhiri (visitors) to make them one with the place and it's people.
Local iwi, Ngāi Tūāhuriri will welcome all attendees with their tikanga and kawa (customs and protocol) to ŌtautahiChristchurch with a mihi whakatau this is a gesture of manaakitanga (caring for others) and whakamana i te tāngata (empowering others)
Recreation Aotearoa may give a short reply and sing a waiata (song) in response. We will display the words on screen so please join in!
