Field Trip One - Urban Ngāhere Strategy - Greening Auckland's CBD

Auckland Council's Parks and Community Facilities department have been working hard to green public spaces within the Auckland CBD, working closely with partners including Eke Panuku and the City Rail Link to deliver street trees and urban greening at key locations in both lower, midtown and the upper CBD.

This includes transformational projects such as a linear park Te Hā Noa, the CRL, and the reimaging of our waterfront along Quay Street and the Britomart precinct. As we continue to learn more about the benefits provided by trees for water retention, heat reduction, carbon sequestration and mental health, its vital that we continue to deliver high quality urban ngāhere projects within the city centre.

Join us for a tour of some of the most significant urban greening projects occurring within the Auckland CBD.

Field Trip Two - Play is Everywhere

The play field trip in Tāmaki Makaurau will highlight several important sites for play in South Auckland and share insights about how different play spaces were developed in partnership with others, illustrating how Auckland Council works with its wider community to achieve good play outcomes for tamariki and whānau.

Where possible, team members involved in the projects will be present at each site to discuss the aims, processes, and outcomes for each site. Delegates will be able to ask questions and will be given a summary that details the sites visited and the information shared. Depending on time, sites visited will include:

  1. Hayman Park, Manukau
  2. Māngere Mountain, Māngere
  3. Te Pua Keith Park, Manurewa
  4. David Lange Park, Māngere
  5. Tupu Adventurous Nature Space, Ōtara

Field Trip Three - Te Piringa /Cascade Kauri, Waitākere Ranges Regional Park

Join this excursion out in the Wops, or one of Auckland's most beautiful natural settings, which covers a story that started back in 2006. Scientists became increasingly concerned by how Kauri were dying in the park, in the process discovering the Phytophra species that was new to science.

This birthed a National Pest Management Plan for Kauri, and in 2017 Te Kawerau a Maki declared a rāhui to protect this sacred ngāhere which became close in 2018. Representatives from Auckland Council and Te Kawerau a Maki will share the significance of the site, the journey to reopening access, missteps along the way, technical aspects and trials of track building, and ongoing challenges to developing a cohesive long-term strategy to balance the mauri of the area.
